Day Ninety Eight – A Massive Cheat Day

Today we visited Mimi’s Bakehouse (a family run bakery in Edinburgh) to celebrate Brandon’s Mum’s retirement. I had never been before but it was a cake lovers paradise. I think I may now actually be a converted cake lover. I think about cupcakes on a pretty much daily basis nowadays! I didn’t hold back at brunch either – I’m nearly there, right?

My intake was:

  • Ciabatta Roll w/ Pork and Caramelised Onion Sausages
  • Mars Bar Chocolate Cake (this was out of this world!)
  • Chinese (I gave in to the cravings!)

After brunch we went into town shopping but I could hardly move from being so full so it was good to walk it off. I am coming towards the end of my challenge but I don’t feel overly guilty as I’m allowing myself a treat whilst eating healthily 90% of the time. We then had a Chinese for dinner which I did regret immediately afterwards. I wasn’t even really that hungry and I allowed my cravings to take control of my choices. I also wolfed it down at 9pm, so I’m off to bed feeling full and awful. I need to get back on it tomorrow (and stay on it this time). I’ve been far too lax and I feel like I’ve let myself down right at the end.

Day Ninety Seven – Steak Night

I was working so unfortunately that meant I couldn’t fit in my workout before work. I really must start going for outdoor runs when I am restricted by the gym opening hours but there is something in my head that goes ‘nope, it’s the weekend, NO workouts!’ I definitely tend to be a lot more relaxed at the weekend, with my diet as well. I also find that because Brandon is home and off work, I like to make the most of this time with him, often eating out. However, I’m hoping to get back into a workout routine on the weekends once I am settled in my new flat and find some new local running routes.

I was really craving a Chinese takeaway but I didn’t want the steaks we had planned to go to waste and Brandon managed to talk some sense into me. I had a really nice night in and even managed to stay awake through an entire movie which I haven’t done for a long time. We watched End of Watch for the second time (I fell asleep the first) and I’d highly recommend it! It was a lovely night in chilling with some red wine to accompany.

My intake for the day was:

  • Nutrigrain Raisin Bake
  • Graze Snack Pack
  • Steak, Asparagus and Tomatoes
  • 4 Ferrero Rochers (woops)

The chocolates were a gift from a colleague in work and they are really hard to say no to! I can’t believe how much of a sweet tooth I have developed.

Anyways, we’re up early to go for brunch tomorrow. Enjoy your Saturday nights!

Day Ninety Two – I Made It

When I got up this morning I was feeling a little unsteady but as I was home, in my bed early and got a good enough sleep it wasn’t as bad as it could have been! I was up at 6am and despite knocking over a glass of juice and having to clean it up, then forgetting the bus times were different due to the bank holiday, I made it to the gym and got a pretty decent workout in. I wasn’t quite up for a run (that could have been chaos with my fragile stomach) so I opted for a full body workout. I pushed myself until I seriously could not handle any more. I was really proud of myself for going. I used to party a lot during my time at university and I’d never work out the morning after a night out – well actually I’d never work out period. This is a massive step in the right direction for me and I’m learning that my fitness and health means a lot more to me than having a few too many drinks. I care more about fitting in my workouts than nights out and I have been criticised for that but each to their own right? I’ll have the last laugh I’m sure. I’d much rather be drenched in sweat in the gym than lying in my bed hungover.

My intake for the day was:

  • Nutrigrain Granola Bar
  • M&S Sweet Chilli Lentil Curls (this felt like I was eating crisps – ideal!)
  • Harissa Chicken and Couscous Salad
  • Risotto w/ Chorizo and Peppers

I got home from work and Brandon’s Mum had prepared our dinner for us. I was massively grateful for this as it meant I could just hop into bed afterwards and chill out. After a long day at work it was exactly what I was needing.

See; Monday’s are not so bad!

Day Ninety One – The Wrong Kind of Sunday Session

So I went out for lunch today with Brandon to celebrate our offer being accepted on the flat and things quickly escalated. We ended up at a day party and I had far too much to drink.

Our lunch destination was lovely. We dined at newly opened The Printing Press, in the centre of Edinburgh. It was grand and the interior was a stunning setting for our little romantic meal. We both had Sirloin Steaks (with chips, sorry!) and shared a bottle of red wine. The food menu was amazing and the dessert menu was completely irresistible. I had a Dark Chocolate Tart (it’s healthy because it was dark chocolate, right?) and Brandon had Apple Pie that looked equally as delicious as mine.

After the day party and a few more drinks down, I knew I had to go home as I had to get up for work. Unfortunately by this point (around 9pm) I was hungry again and we opted for pizza. I hate making bad drunk decisions but it was really good pizza!

My intake for the day was:

  • 2 Slices White Toast w/ Jam
  • Sirloin Steak w/ Chips
  • Diavola (Spicy Sausage) Pizza

Let’s hope I make it to the gym hangover-free tomorrow morning! Wish me luck.

Day Ninety – Saturday Shift

As I type ‘day 90’, I’m in shock. I cannot believe that in 10 days I will have completed the first leg of my journey in the world of fitness and health. I’d never truly believed in the beginning that I could come this far and keep it up and I’ve proven myself wrong, which means a lot to me. I now have a different level of confidence and do not ever doubt myself before trying something. I’ve achieved so much in this time and it just keeps getting better. I’ve shaved down my running times, ventured into the weights section, discovered new classes and tried lots of new, healthy foods and recipes. Things have changed and it’s been for the better. I have never been happier and now feel so at ease in my skin.

I was working today and the gym doesn’t open until 8am on a Saturday morning which frustrates me a lot. I find it too rushed to get a good workout in before starting work at 9.30, so I took another rest day today. I do only tend to go to the gym 4 times a week when I work on a Saturday, which is still a lot better than nothing. My shift went by pretty quickly as I was really busy. I was so eager to get home and relax.

My intake for the day was:

  • Nutrigrain Granola Bar
  • Graze Apple, Cinnamon Almonds and Raisins
  • Minestrone Cup a Soup
  • 2 Home-made Enchiladas w/ Tortilla Chips

It wasn’t the best day in terms of nutrition but I was happy enough with my intake and enjoyed a delicious meal cooked by Brandon’s Mum for me getting in from work; a lovely treat.

Time for the usual Saturday night movie (if I can stay awake) and I also have to get organised for tomorrow. It’s our first Sunday without having to go round open-viewings to find a flat so we’re off out for lunch to celebrate!

Day Eighty Nine – Full Body Friday Workout

I’m a total doughnut. I set my alarm for 9am rather than 6am by accident. Luckily, my body is more than used to getting up early and I woke up naturally just after 6am. I’d have been really annoyed at myself if I’d slept in and missed the gym, nevermind being late to work! I skipped my cardio again this morning and did a heavy full body workout. I put my legs through their paces which I haven’t done properly for a while. Squats, Lunges and Deadlifts. REPEAT. REPEAT. REPEAT. I can guarantee I’ll be feeling it tomorrow. I then did the same with my core. I used heavier weights and upped my reps to get a really great burn.

I was a little bit naughty with my intake today, but it was nice to allow myself the things I wanted:

  • Nutrigrain Granola Bar
  • Apple
  • Graze Blueberry Toasts w/ White Chocolate Dip
  • M&S Sweet Chilli Lentil Curls
  • Smartie’s Cookie (this is where it all went wrong)
  • Salad w/ Chicken
  • Chicken Burrito – No Sour Cream, Beans etc so it’s not too bad
  • Doritos w/ Salsa
  • Cadbury’s Fruit and Nut

Brandon and I decided to have a night in and grab some dinner when he picked me up from work. We stopped off at Illegal Jacks for some Mexican and I have to say it was outstanding. The food was fresh and by omitting the high-fat ingredients, I’m hoping it wasn’t too calorific. Not that it matters with what I ate afterwards. I was having really bad cravings and I gave in to them. I ate far too much and too much of the wrong foods, which I’m slightly disappointed by. I don’t want to throw away any progress by eating crisps and chocolate, but at the same time I enjoyed it and life is for enjoying. As I’ve said countless times it’s all about having the balance.

Hope you all have a great weekend!

Day Eighty Seven – Celebrations

I could barely sleep last night for thinking about submitting our offer on the flat this morning. I was absolutely shattered but I got up at 6am regardless and made my way to the gym. I worked out my full body to make up for missing last nights class which works every muscle group (one of the reasons I liked it so much). Exercise helps me a lot when I am stressed or have things on my mind, as for that period of time when you’re in the gym it’s just about focusing on what you’re doing there and then. I would never describe the gym as serene but I always feel relaxed and at peace whilst I’m there. It’s just part of my daily routine now and I’m entirely comfortable with it.

The flat went to closing at 12pm and by 2pm I’d still heard nothing. I couldn’t concentrate in work. I felt sick and was the most nervous I’ve been throughout this process so far. I knew we had put in a great, competitive offer but I also knew this was right for us. This was the flat that was meant to pop up (cliche but true). Then Brandon texted me to say we’d got it… Our offer was accepted! I was absolutely elated and shocked at the same time. I almost couldn’t believe it; I now own a home. It’s a beautiful two bedroom flat in the centre of Edinburgh. I actually could not be happier. It feels like everything in my life is finally coming together and this is just the start of a new chapter; and hopefully great things to come!

My intake for the day was:

  • Nutrigrain Granola Bar
  • Apple
  • Black Grapes
  • Salad w/ Chicken
  • Turkey Bolognese w/ Wholemeal Fusilli
  • 1/2 Bottle of Red Wine (Celebrations were in order!)

After work, I went to get my nails done. I was delighted as they were really needing done and it always makes me feel great afterwards. But at the same time, I just wanted to get home and dance around the hall singing “we got a flat”. Immature? Yes, but I don’t care. I’m far too excited about it all.

Time for some more celebrations!

Day Eighty Four – Sunday Lunch

What a truly lovely day I’ve had. I woke up pretty much hangover free which was a good start to the day. I had a lazy morning in bed with Brandon, having breakfast and catching up on some of our TV programmes. After a bit of tidying, we got ready for our lunch reservation and headed out to squeeze in some flat viewing beforehand. We saw 3 flats in total, one of which caught our attention in particular. It was bright and spacious with a great big kitchen. Brandon and I spend quite a bit of time cooking together and I could really see us in this flat together. We’ll have to just see what happens. Our property hunt has not been too successful so far.

My intake for today contains some treats:

  • 2 Small Slices Seeded Toast w/ Raspberry Jam
  • New York Onion and Chive Bagel
  • Haggis, Turnips and Potatoes (a small starter portion)
  • Ribeye Steak w/ Chips and Peppercorn Sauce
  • Chocolate Fudge Cake w/ Cherry Meringue Ice-Cream (this was unreal!)

We dined in Monteiths, one of our favourite Scottish restaurants in Edinburgh. As we sat down at around 3.30/4pm, it was a sort of late lunch/early dinner. I was so full afterwards that I went home and slept the evening away. This was a bad idea; I’ll never sleep tonight!

I’m off to get myself ready for the struggle that is Monday mornings.

Day Eighty Three – Saturday Socialising

As normal, I used my Saturday as a rest day after working out 5 times during the week. However, Brandon and I took his dog, Molly for a walk in the morning. The route we took was beautiful; sunny and varied in gradient. We walked for around an hour and it was the perfect opportunity to enjoy the nice weather and each others company. I much prefer being outdoors on the weekend than being stuck inside not really doing anything with my days off.

After our walk we had a pretty busy day! We went to Sainsbury’s and did our weekly food shop. This is one of my favourite parts of the week; it’s so therapeautic and I love knowing that I’m prepped and ready for a week of eating well! I was also hunting around clothes shops for something to wear to go out in the evening. I’d had a bit of a disaster earlier in the day whilst trying things on for my friend’s birthday night out. I just felt like none of my dresses fitted me properly since my body has changed in size and shape. I haven’t actually worn any of them in quite a long time so this was a little bit of a shock. In the end I settled for a skirt and top – always a safe bet. I don’t really go out drinking that much anymore so I haven’t bought any new dresses that fit properly. I’m 100% happier in my gym clothes and I never thought that would be the case. I used to love getting glammed up more than anything, and now I absolutely hate it.

My intake for the day was:

  • Bran Flakes w/ Semi-Skimmed Milk
  • Baked Potato w/ Low Fat Cheddar Cheese
  • Chicken Stir Fry w/ Mushrooms, Spring Onion and Beansprouts
  • McDonald’s Chicken Nuggets and Chips

Despite the outfit drama, I had a really good night in the end. It was lovely to catch up with friends I haven’t seen for a long time; something I need to make more of an effort with. I only had around 4 drinks so I got home nicely merry. However, I did make a very bad choice and ended up with a McDonalds on the way home. Oops!

Let’s hope my hangover isn’t too bad in the morning!

Day Eighty Two – Keeping It Clean At The Office

I’ve been working in an office for nearly a year now and it has definitely had an impact on my eating pattern. It feels like I’m just constantly eating! I tend to have an apple or grapes as soon as I get to work at around 9.30am – I’m always completely ravenous by the time I’ve finished in the gym, gotten showered and ready and made my way to work. I’ll then have a cereal bar shortly after (usually at about 10am) but then I find myself eating the snack I’d saved for 12pm to keep me going til lunchtime. Basically, within the space of an hour and a half I’ll have eaten all the food I’d allocated for the day at work. I don’t get my lunch until 2pm so it’s a long time to wait having finished all my food in the morning. I need to find a way to break this habit and find a more satiating breakfast that I can have on the go/at my desk. (I hate porridge). I am certain that the office environment is to blame for my snacking problem because I don’t eat like that the rest of the time when I’m not at work. It’s beginning to get me down a little as I know it’s not healthy and I worry about the detrimental effect it may be having on my progress.

With these thoughts consuming me I was in a pretty bad mood/hangry (angry because you’re hungry) at work all day. I felt weak, lethargic and really tired. However, this all changed when my colleague Emma (who’s on annual leave at the moment) dropped into the office with some cupcakes just after lunch. Even just looking at the chocolate-y goodness boosted my mood, and tasting it was even better! I’ll be keeping Bibi’s bakery in mind for any future treats/cheats. It was a little bit naughty but I ran 6km on the treadmill this morning and I’m feeling pretty lean at the moment so I’ll forgive myself.

Today’s intake was:

  • Apple and Grape Snack Bag
  • Nutrigrain Granola Bar
  • Nutrigrain Raisin Bake
  • Salad w/ Chicken
  • Salmon w/ Broccoli
  • The Delicious Rocky Road Cupcake

I was going to have some rice with my dinner but after my afternoon indulgence I thought it best to keep my carbs low in the evening. That’s what has made this a sustainable lifestyle for me; making small adjustments in order to fit in the things you want. If I’d denied myself that cupcake, I’d have ended up bingeing in 2 weeks time when any cravings got too much for me. Instead, I allowed myself the treat, made a compromise elsewhere and I’ll be happier and healthier for it.

I hope you all have a great weekend. I’m off for the next two days and I can’t wait to spend some time with friends and loved ones!
