Day Twenty – 10k Challenge

So I’m now a fifth of the way through this journey and I decided there was no better way to celebrate this than by taking on a new challenge! Today I signed up for my first 10km race for charity with Cancer Research’s Race For Life. I’ve never entered a charity run before, or any kind of race for that matter. I spent years scrolling the lists of races longing to be fit enough to enter and to do my bit for charity but I’d always close the browser, thinking ‘maybe the next one.’ And FINALLY that time has come around. I chose to run in the Race For Life as it supports a charity close to my heart. I lost my Dad to cancer in 2008 and ever since I’ve been desperate to support the charity, make a difference to others experiences with cancer and make my Dad proud; this is my opportunity!

As well as all of the charitable and emotional reasons for entering the 10k, there is also my personal fitness goals as well! It’s the perfect first hurdle for me to work towards overcoming and as I’ve said before; having a goal is the perfect way to stay motivated with training and diet. Rather than running on the treadmill aimlessly, I can now implement a targeted training program in order to get me over the finish line on race day! Admittedly, I’ve never ran 10km before, even in training, so it will be interesting to see how my body handles it. When I started dabbling with running as an overweight 16 year old I could barely go 10 minutes on a treadmill without getting out of breath and I’m now comfortably running 5-6.5km in the morning, 5 days a week. I have until mid-June, exactly 4 months tomorrow, to work my way up to 10km! Even just entering the race has me feeling excited and really positive so I can’t imagine how I will feel when I complete it!

I managed to squeeze in a quick 30 minute session at the gym this morning before work. I was actually waiting at the door for it to open, like a crazy fitness fanatic – and surprisingly, I wasn’t the only one. The gym doesn’t open til 8am on a Saturday and I have to be in work for around 9.15am so it doesn’t leave much time for a really good workout, but it’s better than hitting snooze on my alarm clock! I ran on the treadmill for the full half hour; making the most of the fat-burning opportunity. I burned around 350kcals and was pushing myself to up my speeds throughout the run.

My intake for today was:

  • Large Easy Peeler
  • Nutrigrain Blueberry Bar
  • Sweet Chilli Lentil Curls
  • Heinz Weight Watchers Tomato Soup (Lunch)
  • Cocopops Cereal Bar
  • 2 Slices Parma Ham
  • Chicken Breast w/ Rice, Asparagus and Tenderstem Brocolli

After a tediously long day at work, I’m on the sofa with heat pads, I’ve had my dinner and now I’m going to watch Limitless.

Here’s to a wild Saturday night!
